Make the Big Cats Roar..

It’s the theme for the Dakota Zoo’s current capital campaign, and in many ways a representation of how the Zoo has always been supported. When the Zoo has a need, our community makes a loud statement. We did it in 1988, building new exhibits for bears and otters. The support was there again in 1996, when we constructed new homes for mountain lions and bobcats. Now we’re counting on turning another dream into reality.

The next phase of the Dakota Zoo’s master plan is to build new exhibits for Siberian tigers, snow leopards, primates, small animals and reptiles, as well construct a new rest area on the north side of the grounds. It will make our Zoo a better place to visit, and our community a better place to live.

Help us make a difference. Help us “Make the Big Cats Roar..”

SIBERIAN TIGER/SNOW LEOPARD EXHIBIT

Estimated cost: $1.2 million

This spacious outdoor facility will be designed to give Siberian tigers and snow leopards the ample space they need to live a comfortable lifestyle, while providing visitors an excellent chance to see these majestic animals up close. The Siberian tigers will roam inside an area estimated around 80,000 square feet. The snow leopard’s quarters will roughly be 30,000 square feet. Covered viewing windows will be constructed to allow unobstructed views for the public. Each enclosure will be designed to model the cat’s natural habitat, including specially-designed rocks, logs, and filtered pools. The tigers and leopards will also have a private den area, providing ample room for their comfort and safety.

PRIMATE CENTER

Estimated cost: $612,000

The Zoo’s current “monkey barn” will be replaced by the Primate Center, a facility designed for small to medium sized primates. The indoor/outdoor exhibit will be home to spider monkeys, lemurs, gibbons, tamarins, marmosets, wallabies, emus, and muntjac. Unlike the old barn, the Primate Center is designed for year-round viewing, allowing visitors to enjoy these entertaining animals during the winter months too.

NORTH REST AREA

Estimated cost: $150,000

The new rest area will be constructed on the north side of the Zoo near Memorial pond. The structure will contain restrooms, a patio, space for temporary concessions, and room for interpretive displays and special events.

ANIMALS OF THE WORLD BUILDING

Estimated cost: $360,000

The current small animal reptile building is the oldest structure on the Dakota Zoo grounds. Originally the Zoo’s gift shop and concession stand, it also housed an aquarium before eventually becoming the living quarters for today’s snakes and small animals. It does not have heating or air conditioning and is dire need of modernization. The new Animals of the World building will be constructed for year-round viewing, with red pandas, meerkats, tortoise, and various other small mammals and reptiles calling the structure home.
